Z is for Zinc

Zinc is the 30th element on the periodic table. It's standard atomic weight is 65.38, and it was discovered by Andreas Sigismund Marggraf. Zinc is essential to health, zinc deficiency can cause growth retardation, infection susceptibility, and diarrhea in humans.

Y is for Y-Axis

The y-axis is the line on a graph that is vertical. It is used the graph the dependent variables. If you we're to graph the amount of miles a jogger covered, the number of miles would go on the y-axis.

X is for X-Axis

The x-axis is the horizontal line on a graph. This is where the independent variables and time go. If you we're to graph the amount of miles a jogger covers every mile he goes, the time he covers each mile would go on the x-axis.

W is for Waste Reduction

When people choose to take less and use more, it is called wasted reduction. Waste reduction is used to help the environment by taking less resources that nature needs. A common mantra that symbolizes waste reduction is "Reuse, Reduce, Recycle."

V is for Visible Light

The only visible electromagnetic waves we can see are visible light waves. The wavelength for visible light is about 380 nanometers to 740 nanometers. Visible light is between infrared light, which has longer wavelengths, and ultraviolet, which has shorter wave lengths. Some examples of visible light are the sun, and lightbulbs.

U is for Ultraviolet Rays

Ultraviolet light is electromagnetic light. The wavelength is shorter than visible light but longer than x-rays. The sun emits ultraviolet rays.

T is for Terrestrial Habit

A terrestrial habit is a habitat where animals live on land. Trees and mountains are terrestrial habits. Oceans and lakes are not.

S is for Sewage

Sewage is waste carried by water. This is intended to be removed from a community. Sewage is often dumped into the ocean.

R is for Runoff

Runoff water is the water that flows over the ground. Instead of soaking into the ground, it goes over the ground surface. It can be caused by rain or the melting of snow.

Q is for Quasar

Quasars are the things that are the furthest fm our galaxy that can be seen. They are extremely bright masses of energy and light. Quasar is short for quasi stellar.

P is for Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton are the microscopic plants that grow in the upper part of the ocean. They require light for photosynthesis. They may appear green due to the presence of chlorophyll.

O is for Overfishing

Overfishing happens when fishing reduces the fish population to below what it should be. This can lead to fish species being endangered. It can happen in any water.

N is for Niche

A niche is how an organism fits in an ecosystem, it's particular role. For example, a plants niche is producing oxygen and providing food for herbivores. A wolves niche is a predator and controlling the deer population.

M is for Mantle

The mantle is one of the layers that makes up Earth. It comes after the outer core, and before the crust. This is where convection currents occur, they cause the movements of the plates above.

L is for Low Tide

Low tide is the point in the day when he tide is at its lowest. The creatures that lie in the tidal pools are exposed to the sun at this point. The reason the tide is so low, is because the moon is the farthest away from the Earth here, so it's gravity isn't as strong.

K is for Krypton

Krypton is the 36th element on the periodic table. The average mass for krypton is 83.789, and it is a gas. It was discovered by William Ramsay and Morris Travers in 1898.

J is for Jet Streams

Jet stream are about 10 kilometers above Earth's surface. They travel at anywhere from 200 to 400 kmh. They can help or hinder pilots, they could make the flight faster by pushing the plane, or they could slow it down.

I is for Irregular Galaxy

An irregular galaxy is a galaxy that doesn't really have a shape. It's is because stars and planets are scattered around instead so instead of forming a circle, it looks like a blob. Irregular galaxies aren't as common as spiral galaxies.

H is for Habitat

A habitat is where an organism lives. For humans, a habitat is a house or apartment. For beavers, it would be a den.

G is for Gravity

Gravity pulls all objects towards Earth. This is the force that keeps things on the ground. In space however, gravity isn't present. This is why things float on the space shuttles once they're in space.

F is for Full Moon

The full moon is a stage in the moon cycle where we can see the "whole" moon from Earth. We really only see half of the moon, we just see the whole half. This is because of the way it is illuminated by the sun.

E is for Equator

The equator is an imaginary line. It forms a circle around the Earth, between the North and South poles. Places closest to the equator are the warmest because they get the most sunlight.

D is for Desalination

Desalination takes salt and other minerals from seawater. This is used to make the salt we put on our food. Ghandi let a march to the sea where they used desalination to make their own salt instead of buying from the British.

C is for Commercial Harvesting

Commercial harvesting removes organisms from their natural habitat to be used for commercial purposes. They are sold as food, entertainment, or for business purposes. Taking a tiger from the jungle and putting it in a zoo or circus is commercial harvesting.

B is for Biotic Factor

A biotic factor is an part of an ecosystem that is living. Some biotic factors include plants and animals. This is different from abiotic factors, which are not living.

A is for Aquaculture

Aquaculture is when you fish for aquatic organisms. This is done by taking fish, shellfish, or plants from their habitat, a body of water. This is also called farming.
